About Groove Of The Month
I have a whiteboard on my wall in the studio I teach in. When I originally put it there I used it for announcements, notices, etc. I found that no one really paid attention to it on it’s own, and if the announcement was important enough I would always remember to talk about it anyway. Eventually I started using it to put up ‘The Groove Of The Month.’
The groove of the month is just a beat, usually simple, that I wouldn’t normally get to in my normal teaching progressions. Usually it is relatively simple. It has to be easy enough for most students to achieve, yet it has to have enough challenge for the advanced students. Most times that means a discussion about the feel of the groove rather than the technical placement of the notes.
It should be noted as well that I don’t make every student do it. It’s usually the kind of thing that comes up only every once in a while, when we’ve got a few minutes at the end of a lesson, and of course if the student is ready to attempt it.
